OUR STORY

About Christ Community UMC, Avondale

Our church has a very rich history which dates to the late 1920’s when informal services were first held in a schoolhouse on the southeast corner of what is now Central and Western Avenues in Avondale.  Eventually this church was established as a United Methodist church and was called Community UMC. The land where our church currently sits was donated in the 1930’s, and the cornerstone of our sanctuary was laid on March 31, 1946.

Christ United Methodist Church was the result of a merger of two different United Methodist Churches, Desert West UMC and Margaret Brooks Memorial UMC.  They started services together, as Christ UMC, on January 6, 1980, and met at the former Desert West site on 51st Avenue, just south of Thomas Road in Phoenix.  This congregation continued meeting until 2004 when declining membership forced them to make yet another merger.

On the last weekend of August 2004, the union between Christ UMC and Community UMC was celebrated, and a new name was selected, Christ Community United Methodist Church. It was a good fit incorporating both churches into the name. The first worship service was held at the former Community UMC site on September 5, 2004.

Throughout the years, there have been many changes to our campus.  The addition of our Fellowship Hall, classrooms and the east annex have allowed us to be a functional place for our congregation and many groups to gather.  Most recently, we underwent a major renovation that started in 2017.  This renovation widened our breezeway and the altar area in the sanctuary.  Also added were a brand-new narthex, offices, and bathrooms while the old offices transitioned into a new, larger nursery.  Many other cosmetic changes were made around the campus, including new landscaping.  We held our first service in the updated sanctuary on Easter Sunday of 2018.

Ever since, we have continued to refine the plans for our church to keep us relevant with the ever-changing times. We have created a bold image of who we are and we use this image to consistently communicate with our community through technological advancements. Our website, YouTube Channel, Facebook page and Instagram page are all continuously being updated.  Text alerts are sent to coordinators to mobilize, when necessary, and we provide both in-person and virtual meetings and services.

Ultimately, here at Christ Community UMC, it has always been our goal of being a fellowship that holds Christ above all things.  By His grace we exist to love God and give thanks.  We strive to lead people to a saving, loving relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, by being a welcoming, encouraging, and inspiring congregation.
